"Blink, The Keep, Drift" – Three Sheets in Quiet Conversation with the Sea

For the upcoming mini print biennial themed The Sea and the Lighthouses, I wanted to approach the theme from an intimate angle. Rather than depicting the sea or lighthouses literally, I worked with symbols of navigation, signaling, and what remains or is left behind. The series consists of three drypoint prints: I. Blink, II. The Keep, and III. Drift.

These works are part of an ongoing project exploring small-format prints that depict everyday objects imbued with layered meanings. Ordinary things become vessels of memory, grief, quiet violence, or resistance. In this series, a dream image of a forgotten strawberry and a swarm of flies was the starting point. After a conversation with my father, the dream connected back to my grandmother in Chile; a poet and feminist who, after her divorce, lost the right to publish publicly. It is not the strawberry itself that matters, but what it carries: a sense of the hidden, the abandoned, and a silent beginning of movement.

The three works follow a quiet progression: Blink shows a single strawberry and a fly — the first impulse. The Keep holds a box of berries — a space for gathering, protecting, preserving. Drift shows the fruit swarmed by flies — dissolution and outward movement. Like maritime signals, or bodily navigation: a blink, a holding, an exhale.

The format is part of the work. Each image is printed at 4x4 cm on 20x20 cm paper. The wide margin around the image is not empty, it suggests silence, pause and undertow. Each print positions the image slightly differently on the sheet, with the signature also placed unconventionally. These choices reflect a turning of attention toward the edge, toward what is often overlooked.

The works will travel to Santander, Spain.

All three prints are drypoint and hand-printed on Hahnemühle 230g paper.
